How much does it cost to start mini importation in Nigeria (2026)?

Updated · By the Import2Sales team

Short answer

You can start mini importation in Nigeria from around ₦30,000 to ₦50,000 for a small test order, and roughly ₦150,000 to ₦400,000 for a first real stock order. Your real cost is supplier price plus freight (air around ₦13,000/kg as an assumption), the agent fee and local delivery. Pre-orders let you start with far less.

What makes up the cost of starting mini importation?

Four things decide your starting cost: the supplier price of the goods, freight to Nigeria, your agent's fee, and local delivery to your customer. Everything else (data, sample costs, a little airtime) is small but real.

Freight is usually the part people underestimate. As of 2026-10, forwarders quote China-to-Nigeria air freight for regular goods at roughly $6 to $12 per kilo: Sino-Shipping listed about $6 to $7 per kilo in October 2026, while consumer-facing forwarders like Aquantuo (about $9.50/kg) and GIG Logistics (about $10.50/kg for regular items) sit higher; special items like batteries or phones cost much more. Converted to naira, those sit around the ₦13,000/kg air-freight figure we use as an Import2Sales default assumption. Rates move with FX and item category, so confirm the exact number with your agent before you pay.

How much do I need for a small test order?

A small test order costs roughly ₦30,000 to ₦50,000. The idea is to buy a tiny quantity of one product, ship it, and prove the demand and the numbers before you risk more money.

At this level you might buy 3 to 5 units weighing about 2kg total. Supplier cost might be ₦20,000, air freight at the ₦13,000/kg assumption adds about ₦26,000, and a shared agent fee and your local delivery add a few thousand more. Many agents charge a minimum chargeable weight (often rounding items under 1kg up to 1kg), so very light test parcels can feel expensive per unit.

How much for a first real stock order?

A first real stock order is usually ₦150,000 to ₦400,000. Here you are buying enough units to sell at a profit after all costs, not just testing.

Buying more spreads your agent fee and freight minimums across more units, which lowers your cost per item. This is also where cheaper sourcing matters: 1688 is often well below AliExpress for the same item, which is why many sellers graduate to it once they can read listings or use an agent. A worked example: one product, start to finish

Say you want to test a kitchen gadget. Supplier price is ₦5,000 per unit and each weighs 0.4kg. You order 5 units.

Goods cost ₦25,000. Shipping weight is 2kg, so air freight at the ₦13,000/kg assumption is ₦26,000. Add an agent/clearing fee of about ₦8,000 and local delivery within your city of about ₦3,000. Your total landed cost is roughly ₦62,000, or about ₦12,400 per unit. If you sell each at ₦18,000, that is ₦5,600 profit per unit before data and airtime.

What are the hidden costs people forget?

  • Sample costs: buying one unit first to check quality often means paying full freight on a single item, which is pricey per kilo.
  • Failed and returned deliveries: with pay-on-delivery, some customers don't show up, and you still paid to ship the item to them.
  • Returns and damaged stock: a few units may arrive broken or not match the listing photos.
  • Data and airtime: you'll spend steadily on data to post on WhatsApp Status and chat with buyers.
  • FX swings: because freight and goods are priced in dollars or yuan, a weaker naira quietly raises your cost between order and arrival.
  • Agent minimums: many forwarders bill a minimum chargeable weight and round items under 1kg up to 1kg, and some set a 100kg minimum on consolidated or special cargo, so small parcels cost more per kilo.

Can I start with less money using pre-orders?

Yes. With pre-orders you collect orders (and often part-payment) from customers before you import, so their money funds much of your stock. This is the lowest-capital way to start.

This is exactly how a WhatsApp-first seller works: build a simple sales page for the product, share the link on Status, and collect orders in chat before committing cash. Import2Sales turns an AliExpress, 1688, Temu or Alibaba link into a mobile sales page with a one-tap Order on WhatsApp button, which suits pre-orders and payment on delivery. Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum capital to start mini importation in Nigeria?

Practically, around ₦30,000 to ₦50,000 covers a genuine small test order (goods, air freight and local delivery). You can start with much less by using pre-orders, where customers pay part or all upfront before you import. Treat low figures in sales guides as optimistic, and always run your numbers with a freight quote from your agent.

Do I need CAC registration to start mini importation?

Not to begin at a small, personal scale. But registering a business name with the CAC (from around ₦10,000, per AFSIC) builds customer trust and is often expected once you open a business bank account or import formally through a bank. Fees change, so confirm the current amount on the official CAC portal before you register.

How much is shipping from China to Nigeria?

Air freight for regular goods was quoted at roughly $6 to $12 per kilo by forwarders as of 2026-10 (about $6 to $7/kg at Sino-Shipping, around $9.50 to $10.50/kg at Aquantuo and GIG Logistics), usually with a minimum chargeable weight. In naira that is near the ₦13,000/kg Import2Sales default assumption. Special items like batteries or phones cost much more, so confirm your item's category with your agent.

Is there a duty-free amount I can import?

Nigeria Customs set a de minimis threshold of US$300 per shipment, effective 8 September 2025, for up to four imports per year, per a German trade report. Shipments at or under that value can enter free of duty if the goods are not prohibited or restricted. Confirm the current rule with your agent, as policies change.

How do I calculate my real cost per item?

Add the supplier price, the freight for that item's weight, a share of the agent fee, and local delivery, then divide by the number of units. That total is your landed cost. The free Product Opportunity Checker does this for you and shows profit, margin and a 0-100 score from supplier price, weight and selling price.

Can customers in my state receive the goods easily?

Yes, most sellers deliver through local dispatch riders or interstate park/bus logistics, and many use pay on delivery. Your delivery cost depends on your city and distance. See the state-by-state mini importation hub for local context on receiving goods and arranging delivery in your area.

Should I use air or sea freight when starting?

Start with air. It is faster (forwarders estimate roughly one to two weeks versus several weeks for sea) and sea is usually priced per cubic metre (LCL around $435/cbm as of 2026-10 per Sino-Shipping), which only pays off for bulky or heavy stock small starters can't fill. Move to sea when you order heavier goods. See air vs sea shipping from China to Nigeria.
