How to tell if a product is worth importing
A product is worth importing when your selling price covers the full landed cost with a healthy margin, around 40–50% or more, and buyers can understand it from a photo or short video. Landed cost is the supplier price plus agent and payment fees, freight (by weight for air cargo) and local costs such as clearing and delivery to you. Read the full landed cost guide.
How the product score works
| Factor | Points | Full points when… |
|---|---|---|
| Profit margin | 30 | margin is 50% or more |
| Profit per unit | 20 | you make ₦10,000 or more per unit |
| WhatsApp sellability | 20 | it is easy to show on video and solves a clear problem |
| Price point | 15 | it sells for ₦5,000–₦40,000 (impulse-buy range) |
| Shipping practicality | 15 | it weighs 300 g or less and is not fragile |
80+ is a hot pick, 65–79 is promising, 50–64 means proceed with care, and below 50 means probably skip.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a product is worth importing to Nigeria?
Work out the landed cost per unit (supplier price, fees, freight by weight and local costs), compare it with what buyers will pay, and aim for a margin of around 40-50% or more. Products that are light, easy to show in a short video and solve a clear problem are also easier to sell on WhatsApp.
How is the Import2Sales product score calculated?
The score adds up five factors from the numbers you enter: profit margin (30 points), profit per unit (20), WhatsApp sellability from your two yes/no answers (20), whether the price suits an impulse buy (15) and shipping practicality from weight and fragility (15). A product that loses money is capped at 25.
Are the landed cost and profit figures exact?
No. They are estimates from your inputs and typical assumptions. Freight rates, exchange rates, agent fees and duties change and differ between agents, so replace the defaults with your own agent's quote before you buy stock.
Does the checker know how much demand there is for a product?
No. It does not guess demand. Test demand yourself before ordering in bulk, for example by posting the product on your WhatsApp Status, taking pre-orders, or placing a small test order.
Is the Import2Sales product checker free?
Yes. Anyone can use the checker and share the result card without an account. If you decide to sell the product, you can turn the supplier link into a sales page with a WhatsApp order button, and your first page is free.
