What should I import from China to sell in Nigeria in 2026?

Updated · By the Import2Sales team

Short answer

Import products that are light (ideally under 500g), hard to break, easy to show in a short video, and that solve a clear everyday problem: phone accessories, small kitchen gadgets, beauty tools, fashion accessories, home organisers and baby items. Check the Customs prohibition list first, work out your full landed cost, and test demand before you order in bulk.

What makes a good mini importation product?

A good mini importation product is light, hard to break, easy to show off, solves a real problem, and still leaves you a healthy profit after every cost of getting it to your customer. If a product fails any one of these, the risk goes up fast.

Most small importers ship by air, and air cargo is charged by the kilogram. A light product keeps your cost per unit low, so you have more room for profit. Fragile items like glass, ceramics or thin screens can arrive cracked, and you have to absorb that loss. The product also has to sell itself on WhatsApp Status or in a 15-second video, so it needs a clear before-and-after or a visible 'wow'. Finally, the margin must survive landed cost: the supplier price plus shipping, agent fees and local delivery, not just the price on 1688 or AliExpress.

  • Weight: aim for under 500g per unit; lighter is better for air cargo.
  • Fragility: it should survive being dropped in a carton without special packing.
  • Visual: you can show what it does in one photo or a short clip.
  • Problem-solving: buyers immediately understand why they need it.
  • Margin: set your own minimum margin on top of landed cost, with enough room to cover returns, data and delivery hiccups.
  • Legal: it is not on the import prohibition list and does not need special registration you can't get.

Which product categories fit those criteria?

Phone accessories, small kitchen gadgets, beauty and grooming tools, fashion accessories, home organisers and baby items usually fit best, because they are light, visual and solve everyday problems. Each has trade-offs, so compare them before you choose.

Phone accessories (cases, cables, holders, ring lights) are light and always in demand, but competition in Lagos markets is heavy and buyers compare prices. Small kitchen gadgets (choppers, oil sprayers, storage containers) demo well on video, but some are bulky for their weight. Beauty tools (brushes, hair tools, nail kits) are light and visual; skincare and creams are a different story, covered below. Fashion accessories like jewellery, watches, caps and belts are very light, but trends change quickly. Home and car organisers and baby items (bibs, feeding accessories, bath toys) solve clear problems, though parents also want quality assurance.

What should I avoid importing into Nigeria?

Avoid anything on the Nigeria Customs import prohibition list, plus products that need regulatory registration you don't have. A revised prohibition list dated 1 April 2026 covers 17 categories, according to Arise News, including paracetamol tablets and syrups, frozen poultry, pork and beef, refined vegetable oil in retail packs of five litres or less, retail-pack sugar, soaps and detergents for retail sale, ballpoint pens and refills, bagged cement and hollow glass bottles over 150ml.

The US trade.gov guide to Nigeria's prohibited imports also lists second-hand clothing and counterfeit or pirated goods as absolutely prohibited, and shows footwear, bags and suitcases on the wider prohibited list, with some exceptions such as sports and canvas shoes. That guide was last updated in 2023, so treat it as background and confirm the current position with your clearing agent as of 2026-10.

Two other rules catch new importers. Cosmetics must be registered with NAFDAC before they are imported, advertised or sold; LawPadi's guide explains that unregistered products can be confiscated and serious cases can lead to prosecution. And SON-regulated products need certification under the Standards Organisation of Nigeria's SONCAP scheme, a pre-shipment certification programme. SON's FAQ does not list every regulated product, so ask your shipping agent directly before you buy electronics or other manufactured goods that may be covered.

  • Medicines, supplements and anything you swallow or inject
  • Creams, soaps and cosmetics unless you understand NAFDAC rules
  • Second-hand clothing and counterfeit branded goods
  • Glass, ceramics and large fragile items
  • Batteries, power banks and liquids, which many air cargo agents restrict (ask yours)

How do I know if the profit is worth it?

The profit is worth it only after you add every cost between the supplier and your customer's hand, then compare that landed cost with the price Nigerians will actually pay. A cheap item on 1688 can become much more expensive once shipping and fees are added.

Landed cost per unit = supplier price + China domestic delivery to your agent + international shipping (by kg for air, by CBM for sea) + agent or clearing fees + exchange-rate spread + local delivery. Shipping rates and exchange rates move often, so get a written quote from your agent each time. Our guide on how to calculate landed cost walks through it step by step.

To check a product quickly, enter the supplier price, weight and your planned selling price into the free Import2Sales Product Opportunity Checker. It estimates landed cost, profit and margin and gives a 0-100 product score, so you can drop weak ideas before you spend.

How can I test demand before ordering in bulk?

Test demand by showing the product to real buyers and collecting commitments before you place a large order. Three cheap tests work well for mini importers, plus simple tracking.

  1. 1Run a WhatsApp Status poll: post 2-3 product photos and ask viewers to reply with the one they would buy and what they would pay. Count replies, not views.
  2. 2Take pre-orders: post the product with price and an honest delivery timeline based on your agent's quote, and ask for a deposit or firm commitment. A simple product page with an 'Order on WhatsApp' button makes this easier to share.
  3. 3Place a small test order: buy a small quantity, sell it, and note which questions buyers ask and which complaints come up. Only scale the winners.
  4. 4Track results: write down how many people asked, how many paid, and your real profit per unit after delivery.

How do I present the product so it sells?

Present each product with clear photos, a short video, the price, delivery time and a one-tap way to order, because buyers on phones decide quickly. A single link you can drop on Status, in groups and in DMs works better than retyping details every time.

Import2Sales can turn a 1688, AliExpress, Temu or Alibaba product link into a mobile sales page with a headline, benefits, FAQ and an 'Order on WhatsApp' button, which suits pre-orders and payment on delivery. It is not a full online store, so there is no cart or inventory and you still manage stock and delivery yourself. For more on selling, see how to sell mini importation goods on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most profitable thing to import from China to Nigeria?

There is no single most profitable product, because profit depends on your landed cost, your selling price and your buyers. Light, non-fragile items such as phone accessories, beauty tools, fashion accessories and small kitchen gadgets are often good fits for mini importers, but competition varies. Calculate landed cost for each product and test demand with a small order before scaling.

Can I start mini importation with ₦50,000?

Many people start small, but whether ₦50,000 is enough depends on the product price, weight, current shipping rates and your agent's minimum charges. Light items let you bring more units for the same budget. Get a current quote from your agent, calculate landed cost per unit, and start with a small test quantity rather than spending everything on one product.

Is it legal to import cosmetics from China to sell in Nigeria?

Cosmetics are regulated by NAFDAC, and the general rule is that cosmetics must be registered before they are imported, advertised or sold in Nigeria. A foreign manufacturer's products are registered through a Nigerian representative, with several documents required. If you are a small seller, beauty tools like brushes and hair accessories are a simpler starting point than creams or skincare.

How do I check if an item is banned from import in Nigeria?

Check the current import prohibition list from the Nigeria Customs Service; a revised list dated 1 April 2026 was reported in the news. Also ask your shipping or clearing agent, because they handle clearance regularly and know which items get seized or restricted. Avoid second-hand clothing, counterfeit goods, common medicines and items like retail-pack soap and ballpoint pens.

Should I ship by air or sea for mini importation?

Air cargo is faster and charged by weight, so it suits light, small orders and testing new products. Sea cargo is charged by volume and is usually cheaper for bulky or larger orders, but it takes much longer. Many mini importers test with air, then move proven products to sea. Always compare current quotes from your agent.
